Toch nog meer over Sergei G. Shigis (Zhigis)

Gisteren meldde ik nog bij de oplossing van studie 31 dat ik helaas niet meer gegevens over de componist kon melden dan zijn naam. Al doorzoekend echter, ook met de niet geringe hulp van de directeur-webmaster en tegelijk enige werknemer van de site Foppygames (computerspellen (zie algemene links), waar overigens al geruime tijd niet aan is gewerkt, wegens andere tijdrovende hobbies), doken toch iets meer details op.
Tot dan had ik gezocht met de transcriptie Shigis, of met de variant Schigis, maar nu werd ook de variant Zhigis in de strijd geworpen en dat gaf resultaat, zij het nog steeds in bescheiden mate, maar dat zal liggen aan het feit dat er gewoon niet meer is....

In de elektronische variant van het schaaktijdschrift EG, jrg. VI (maart 1988) nr. 91, p. 328 (of p. 8 v.d. elektronische versie) verscheen een artikel van de hand van Gennady Novikov, dat over de componist handelde! Hier stond ook een aantal studies bij, maar die heb ik , omdat het me nu even om de man zelf ging, hier niet meegenomen. Hopelijk neemt de auteur me dat niet kwalijk.
Uit het onderstaande blijkt waarom ARVES niet beschikt over geboorte- en sterftejaar: er is namelijk over Zhigis uiterst weinig bekend!

SERGEI G. ZHIGIS

In 1927 "64" published a study (Nl) by the hitherto unknown composer C.G. Zhigis from the town of Vitebsk in Byelorussia. V. Platov and A. Selesniev, joint editors of the studies section, drew chessplayers' attention to its qualities of excellence and originality.
That was how the Byelorussian composer Sergei Zhigis first drew attention to himself. He came to composition one might say headlong. It was only in 1926 that the editors' correspondence column had advised the young composer to pay attention to the technique of study composing, but in the 1927-28 period no fewer than six of Zhigis' studies were published by "64". More than a score of Sergei Zhigis'studies appeared in "64", "Shakhmatny listok", and the pages of "Zadachy i etyudy". He also composed some draughts problems. He reached his peak around 1929-30,when most of his studies known today were published. Thereafter his activity sharply declined. Only two studies appeared after the period 1931-36: one in the newspaper "Rabochy", the other took 2nd Hon. Mention in the tourney held for the Third International Chess Tournament.

There are many blank pages in Zhigis' life. His place and date of birth are unknown, as are his occupation and the reason he ceased composing.

When one looks at Zhigis' studies from a contemporary standpoint one notices an average level of quality with the occasional sparkling interlude.
It is clear that the composer did not seek brilliant new positions but devoted himself to perfecting the ideas already known at that time. [.........]

In hetzelfde EG, maar dan in jrg. IV (apr. 1981) nr. 64 staat op pagina 408 (p. 4 v.d. elektronische versie) ook een artikel over Zhigis, getiteld JIGISSAW van de hand van J. Vandiest. De titel is duidelijk een woordspeling op de naam Zhigis, maar dan in een alweer andere transcriptie (Jigis).
